Scarf : about 7 x 66 inches (18 x 167.5 centimeters)
Hat :about 19 inches. (48.5 centimeters) circumference, will stretch to fit a range of sizes.
Gauge:18 stitches = about 4 inches. (10 centimeters) in Knit 2, purl 2 Rib, slightly stretched. Be sure to check your gauge.
Stitch explanation:
Knit 2, purl 2 Rib worked in rounds (multiple of 4 stitches)
Round 1: *Knit2, purl2; repeat from * to end of round.
Repeat Round 1 for Knit2, purl2 Rib worked in the round.

Row 1: Knit 2, *purl 2, knit 2; repeat from * to end of row. Row 2:
Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches.

Stripe sequence
Work in stitch pattern as noted for Hat or Scarf, changing colors as follows:
Work 2 rows with color A
2 rows with color B
2 rows with color A
2 rows with color B
8 rows with color A
2 rows with color B
2 rows with color A
2 rows with color B
2 rows with color A
6 rows with color B
Repeat these 30 rows for Stripe Sequence, working in stitch pattern specified for Hat or Scarf.
SCARF
With straight needles and color A, cast on 50 stitches.
Working in Knit 2, purl 2 Rib worked back and forth in rows and changing color
following Stripe Sequence, repeat Rows 1-30 of Stripe Sequence until piece
measures about 66 inches. (167.5 centimeters) from beginning.
Bind off.
HAT
With circular needle and color A, cast on 88 stitches. Place marker for beginning of round
and join by working first stitch on left needle with yarn from right needle,
being careful not to twist stitches. Slip marker as each round is completed. Rounds 1-11;
Work in Knit 2, purl 2 Rib worked in rounds changing color following Stripe Sequence. Round 12 (Turning Ridge for cuff):
Continuing in Stripe Sequence, *purl 2, knit 2; repeat from * around. Rounds 13-44:
Continue in Knit 2, purl 2 Rib and Stripe Sequence. Shape Crown (top of Hat)
NOTES
1. Continue in Stripe Sequence as you shape the crown.
2. As you work Round 45, change to double pointed needles by
knitting or purling stitches onto one double pointed needles at a time, 16 stitches onto first double pointed needles,
16 stitches onto second double pointed needles, 17 stitches onto third anf fourth double pointed needles. Remember to
move your marker to the double pointed needles as well! Round 45 (Decrease Round):
*Purl2, knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * around - you will find that you made 66 stitches at the end of this round. Round 46;
*Purl 2, knit 1; repeat from * around. Rounds 47-48:
Repeat Round 46, continuing in Stripe Sequence. Round 49 (Decrease Round):
*Purl 2 stitches together, knit 1; repeat from * around - you will find that you made 44 stitches. Round 50;
*Purl 1, knit 1; repeat from * around. Round 51 (Decrease Round):
*Knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * around - you will find that you made 22 stitches. Round 52: Knit. Round 53 (Decrease Round):
Knit 2 stitches together around. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining stitches, gather tightly and knot.
FINISHING
Weave in ends.
