Varsity Stripe Hat and Scarf

 

 SIZE: One Size 
 
Scarf : about 7 x 66 inches (18 x 167.5 centimeters)
Hat :about 19 inches. (48.5 centimeters) circumference, will stretch to fit a range of sizes.


Gauge:18 stitches = about 4 inches. (10 centimeters) in Knit 2, purl 2 Rib, slightly stretched. Be sure to check your gauge. 

Stitch explanation:
Pattern stitches

Knit 2, purl 2 Rib worked in rounds (multiple of 4 stitches)
Round 1:
*Knit2, purl2; repeat from * to end of round.
Repeat Round 1 for Knit2, purl2 Rib worked in the round.                                                                

Knit 2, purl 2 Rib worked back and forth in rows (multiple of 4 stitches + 2)
Row 1:
Knit 2, *purl 2, knit 2; repeat from * to end of row.
Row 2:
Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches.
Repeat Row 2 for Knit 2, purl 2 Rib worked back and forth in rows.
Notes:
Materials notes
1. For Hat only, you will need 1 ball of each color yarn. For Scarf only, you will need 2 balls of each color.
2. Scarf can be worked back and forth in rows on circular needle or on straight needles.

Stripe sequence
                                                     
Work in stitch pattern as noted for Hat or Scarf, changing colors as follows:
Work 2 rows with color A
2 rows with color B
2 rows with color A
2 rows with color B
8 rows with color A
2 rows with color B
2 rows with color A
2 rows with color B
2 rows with color A
6 rows with color B
Repeat these 30 rows for Stripe Sequence, working in stitch pattern specified for Hat or Scarf.                                                                                                                                            SCARF
With straight needles and color A, cast on 50 stitches.
Working in Knit 2, purl 2 Rib worked back and forth in rows and changing color following Stripe Sequence, repeat Rows 1-30 of Stripe Sequence until piece measures about 66 inches. (167.5 centimeters) from beginning.
Bind off.                                                                                                                                                                                   HAT
With circular needle and color A, cast on 88 stitches. Place marker for beginning of round and join by working first stitch on left needle with yarn from right needle, being careful not to twist stitches. Slip marker as each round is completed.
Rounds 1-11;

Work in Knit 2, purl 2 Rib worked in rounds changing color following Stripe Sequence.
Round 12 (Turning Ridge for cuff):
Continuing in Stripe Sequence, *purl 2, knit 2; repeat from * around.
Rounds 13-44:
Continue in Knit 2, purl 2 Rib and Stripe Sequence.
Shape Crown (top of Hat)
NOTES

1. Continue in Stripe Sequence as you shape the crown.
2. As you work Round 45, change to double pointed needles  by knitting or purling stitches onto one 
double pointed needles at a time, 16 stitches onto first  double pointed needles, 16 stitches onto second  double pointed needles, 17 stitches onto third anf fourth  double pointed needles. Remember to move your marker to the double pointed needles as well!
Round 45 (Decrease Round):
*Purl2, knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * around - you will find that you made 66 stitches at the end of this round.
Round 46;
*Purl 2, knit 1; repeat from * around.
Rounds 47-48:
Repeat Round 46, continuing in Stripe Sequence.
Round 49 (Decrease Round):
*Purl  2 stitches together, knit 1; repeat from * around - you will find that you made 44 stitches.
Round 50;
*Purl 1, knit 1; repeat from * around.
Round 51 (Decrease Round):
*Knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * around - you will find that you made 22 stitches.
Round 52: Knit.
Round 53 (Decrease Round):
Knit  2 stitches together around. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining stitches, gather tightly and knot.                                                                                                                     FINISHING
Weave in ends.

Hat circumference = 14 (16 )

Materials : 
1 skein each 3520 peacock feather A and 3620 fern B

Crochet hook : 5 mm [ US H-8 ]

6 Stitches markers ; two 3/4 buttons ; yarn needle ;matching sewing thread and needle

Gauge :15 stitches = 4 ; 16 rows = 4 in single crochet . Rounds 1- 5 = 3 across
Check your gauge .Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Note : Do not cut color s but drop to wrong side until required on alternate rounds

Hat :

With color A , chain 4 ;join with slip stitch to form a ring .

Round 1 : Chain 1, 8 single crochet in ring ; join with a slip stitch in first single crochet .you will find that you made 8 single crochet.

 Round 2 : With color  B , chain 1,increase means (2 single crochet in each single crochet) around;join .you will find that you made 16 single crochet.

  Round 3 : With color A ,Chain 1,[ single crochet in single crochet ,increase means  (2 single crochet in next single crochet) ] make what between [] 8 times ; join .you will find that you made 24 single crochet.

Round 4 : With color  B , chain 1,[ single crochet in 2 single crochet  , increase means ( 2 single crochet in next single crochet) ] make what between [] 8 times ; join .you will find that you made 32 single crochet.

 Round 5 : With color  A , chain 1, [ single crochet in 3 single crochet  ,increase means ( 2 single crochet in next single crochet) ] work directions in  [] 8 times ; join .you will find that you made 40 single crochet.

Both sizes - Rounds 9 - 25 ( 9 - 29 ) :continue to alternate color every round , chain 1 single crochet in each single crochet around ; join . Fasten off after round 25 (29)

Ear flaps & Front flaps :

Beginning  at center back joining , place markers for ear flaps at stitch 8,21,36 and 49 ( 9 , 24 , 41, and 56 ) . Ear flaps are worked between markers 8 and 21 ( 9 and 24 ) and between markers 36 and 49 ( 41and 56 ).

Left ear flap :
Row 1 : With right side facing , join color A with single crochet in marked stitch 8 (9) , single crochet to marked stitch 21 ( 24 ) ;turn .you will find that you made 14 (16) single crochet.

Row 2 : Chain 1, single crochet in each single crochet across.

Row 3 :Chain 1 ,Decrease means ( [draw up a loop in next single crochet ] twice , yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook ); single crochet to last two single crochet ; decrease means ( [draw up a loop in next single crochet ] twice , yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook ) .you will find that you made 12 (14) stitches .

Row 4 - 11( 4 - 13 ) : Repeat rows 2 and 3  4 ( 5 ) times . you will find that you made 4 single crochet.

 Row 12 ( 14 ): Chain 1 , Decrease means ( [draw up a loop in next single crochet ] twice , yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook ) Twice ;Turn you will find that you made 2 single crochet.

 Row 13 ( 15 ): Chain 1 ,, Decrease means ( [draw up a loop in next single crochet ] twice , yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook ) .you will find that you made 1 single crochet.

Tie row 14 ( 16 ) : Chain 14 , slip stitch in second chain from hook and in each chain across . Fasten off

Right ear flap : 

Row 1 : Join color A with single crochet in marked stitch 49  ( 56 ) ; Turn . you will find that you made 14 ( 16 ) single crochet.

 Row 2- 14 ( 2 - 16 ) : Work same as for left ear flap .
  
Front flap :

Row 1 : With right side facing , join color A with sing crochet  in marked stitch 22 ( 25 ) , single crochet to marked stitches 35 ( 40 ) ; Turn .you will find that you made 14 ( 16 ) single crochet.

 Row 2 : Chain 1, single crochet in each single crochet  across ; Turn .

 Row 3 - Buttonhole : Chain 1 , single crochet in first single crochet , chain 2 , skip next 2 single crochet , single crochet in next 8 (10) single crochet , chain 2, skip next 2 single crochet , single crochet in last single crochet ; Turn.

Gauge

19 single crochet and 20 rows = 4 inches [10 cm ]

Instructions

chain 4 . join with slip stitch in first chain to form a ring.


First round : chain 1. 6 single crochet in ring .join with slip stitch in first single crochet .

Second round : chain 1. 2 single crochet in each single crochet around .join with slip stitch in first single crochet . so you made 12 single crochet .

Third round : chain 1 * 2 single crochet in next single crochet . repeat from * around .join with slip stitch in first single crochet .. so you made 18 single crochet .

4th round : chain 1. *  2 single crochet in next single crochet 1 single crochet in each of next 2 single crochet . repeat from * around .join with slip stitch in first single crochet .. so you made 24 single crochet .

5th round : chain 1. * 2 single crochet in next single crochet. 1 single crochet in each of next 3 single crochet . repeat from * around . join with slip stitch in first single crochet .. so you made 30 single crochet .

6th round : chain 1. * 2 single crochet in next single crochet. 1 single crochet in each of next 4 single crochet . repeat from * around . join with slip stitch in first single crochet .. so you made 36 single crochet .

12th round : As 8th round

continue in same manner ,increase 6 stitches on next and every following alternate round to 72 ( 78 - 84 - 90 ) single crochet. place marker at end of last round.

Repeat  8th round until work from marked round measures 3 (3 1/2  - 3 3/4 - 4 ) ins [7.5 (9 - 9.5 - 10)]cm].


Ruffle : next round : chain 4 (counts as double crochet and chain 1 ) .( 1double crochet . chain 1.1 double crochet ) in same space as slip stitch . * ( chain 1 . 1 double crochet ) 3 times in next single crochet . Repeat from * around . Chain 1 . Join with slip stitch to third chain of chain 4 . Fasten off
